The Holosun 407k

Updated: Aug 5, 2022

I’m checking out a Holosun 407k to give the 6 MOA Dot a chance.

Will it be faster to pick up?

Will it be harder to shoot at distance?

Will it drain batteries faster?

Who knows. But I do know that I try not to talk about things I don’t understand. At this time, I’ve personally owned or otherwise conducted long term testing on 8 different models of pistol mounted optics. This will be another data point I can speak to.

Here at AORD, I stay in my lane and I don’t teach stuff I don’t truly know. I’m always striving to increase my knowledge and experience.

Check back here for updates.

*UPDATE #1

5/20/22

I mounted the dot to a Zev Z365 slide without issue. I used the gun in a class involving lowlight. The large dot doesn’t wash out in different lighting conditions.

Had difficulty zeroing it at 15 yards because the dot completely occluded the 1" target paster I was using as my point of aim. I had zero problems shooting from 5-15 yards.

UPDATE #2

8/5/22

The dot works great. I've put 2000 rounds through the gun/optic combo and it works as it should. It hasn't lost zero through general rough handling and EDC duty.

I was curious if the larger reticle was going to detract from accuracy at distance, and I'm pleased to report that I can't notice a difference in speed or precision between a 3.25 MOA dot and the 6 MOA dot. I can make hits on a C-zone piece of steel at 50 plus yards if I do my part. I don't perceive the red dot detracting from my performance in any way.
